The Magnet Recognition Program® by the American Nurses Credentialing Center of the American Nurses Association is the most prestigious distinction a healthcare organization can receive for nursing excellence and quality patient outcomes. It is the gold standard for hospital nursing. Organizations that achieve Magnet recognition are part of an esteemed group that demonstrates superior nursing practices and outcomes.

Saint Peter's University Hospital achieved Magnet status for 2020-2024, making it one of only 5 hospitals worldwide to receive this designation for six consecutive terms. This recent designation was awarded after an intense three-day survey by nursing experts. Saint Peter's first received Magnet designation in 1998. Research shows that patients who stay in Magnet hospitals benefit from many positive outcomes, including fewer falls, bed sores and infections. Magnet hospitals consistently provide the highest quality patient care.

The Beacon Award for Excellence lauds North American hospital units that employ evidence-based practices to improve patient and family outcomes. Saint Peter’s University Hospital is proud of our Adult Intensive Care and Neonatal Intensive Care units for earning this prestigious award for a sixth and third consecutive time respectively, and we congratulate our Cardiac Progressive Care Unit for becoming a recipient for the second consecutive time. In 2022, Saint Peter’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit received its first Beacon Award.

As part of the Age-Friendly Health System initiative, The John A. Hartford Foundation and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, in partnership with the American Hospital Association and the Catholic Health Association of the United States, are helping hospitals and other care settings implement a set of evidence based interventions specifically designed to improve care for older adults. The hospitals test and adapt interventions designed to provide good care by participating in teams referred to as Age-Friendly Health Systems Action Communities. These communities are collaborative entities comprised of healthcare teams from all over the country who are committed to sharing data and learning together. Teams strive toward reliably implementing best practices across emergency departments, intensive care units, medical-surgical units, and primary and specialty care settings.

NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders) is the leading nurse driven program designed to help hospitals and healthcare organizations improve the care of older adults. The vision of NICHE is for all patients 65 and over to be given sensitive and exemplary care. The mission of NICHE is to provide principles and tools to stimulate a change in the culture of healthcare facilities to achieve patient centered care for older adults. NICHE, based at NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing has over 680 hospitals and healthcare facilities in 46 states, Canada, Bermuda, and Singapore. NICHE designation demonstrates a hospital's organizational commitment and continued progress in improving quality, enhancing the patient and family experience, and supporting the hospital and other healthcare organization's efforts to serve its communities.

The Commission on Cancer (CoC), a quality program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), recognizes cancer care programs for their commitment to providing comprehensive, high-quality, and multidisciplinary patient centered care. The CoC is dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of comprehensive quality care. Through the CoC, cancer programs have access to reporting tools to aid in benchmarking and improving outcomes at their facility as well as educational and training opportunities, development resources, and advocacy.

National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers

When your breast center achieves accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) you can be assured that it is held to the highest standards of care for patients with diseases of the breast.

Our coalition of professional organizations, the NAPBC, works together to provide the most efficient and contemporary breast care using scientific evidence about what works best for patients. At NAPBC we monitor compliance to our standards at each accredited breast center. Our NAPBC Board is composed of leadership from many medical disciplines and upholds nationally recognized quality performance measures for breast cancer treatment. We are administered by the American College of Surgeons (ACS), which for more than 100 years has led national and international initiatives to improve quality in hospitals.

The American Heart Association & American Stroke Association recognize Saint Peter's for achieving 85% or higher compliance with all Get with the Guidelines- Stroke Achievement Measures & 75% or higher compliance with five or more Get with the Guidelines - Stroke Quality Measures for two or more consecutive years to improve quality of patient care and outcomes.

The Women’s Choice Award sets the standard for helping women make smarter choices by collectively identifying the brands, products, and services that deliver a customer experience worthy of recommendation. Awards are based on surveys of thousands of women, as well as research conducted in partnership with the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania on what drives the consumer experience for women. Education Recognition by the American Diabetes Association, the largest and most widely known organization in the field of diabetes (and one of only two bodies deemed as National Accrediting Organization of DSMT programs by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid) identifies quality diabetes self-management education services that meet the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support.

Saint Peter’s University Hospital received an “A” grade in the Fall 2022 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a national distinction recognizing Saint Peter’s achievements protecting patients from errors, injuries, accidents, and infections. The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization committed to health care quality and safety. Developed under the guidance of a national expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses up to 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,700 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public.

Clinical Healthy Work Environment Award – Sigma Theta Tau

The Clinical Healthy Work Environment Award presented by Sigma Theta Tau, an organization that empowers nursing leaders to transform global healthcare, recognizes and honors a clinical facility that demonstrates commitment in promoting a healthy work environment and excellence in healthcare outcomes. Applicants for this prestigious award were evaluated based on the creation of a healthy work environment as demonstrated by new programs with involvement of frontline healthcare workers and sustained programming addressing healthcare workers' needs, along with evidence of positive patient outcomes.

CNOR® Strong

CNOR® Strong designation from the Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI) is given to facilities having at least 50% of its operating room (OR) nursing staff CNOR certified and provides programs that reward and recognize its certified nurses. The CNOR® certification program is for perioperative nurses interested in improving and validating their knowledge and skills and providing the highest quality care to their patients. Certification also recognizes a nurse's commitment to professional development. It is an objective, measurable way of acknowledging the achievement of specialty knowledge beyond basic nursing preparation and RN licensure.

Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS)

Accreditation from the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society

The Wound Care Center® and Hyperbaric Services Saint Peter's University Hospital has received reaccreditation from the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS). UHMS accreditation means Saint Peter's has met or exceeded the highest standards of care and patient safety through rigorous evaluation of our operations, including equipment, staff and training to ensure that the utmost quality is maintained within the specialty of undersea and hyperbaric medicine. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is used to treat specialized conditions and involves the use of medical oxygen administered in a pressure chamber at levels higher than atmospheric pressure.

U.S. News & World Report

Saint Peter’s University Hospital has been recognized as a High Performing Hospital for 2022-23 by U.S. News & World Report. Saint Peter’s earned “High Performing” ratings in COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), Hip Fracture, Acute Kidney Failure and Lung Cancer Surgery in recognition of care that was significantly better than the national average, as measured by factors such as patient outcomes. “High Performing” is the highest rating U.S. News awards for those types of care.

Certified Advanced Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission Report

Saint Peter’s University Hospital achieved certification as an advanced primary stroke center from The Joint Commission, demonstrating that the hospital has consistently met quality metrics and provided some of the best evidence-based care for its stroke patients. An advanced primary stroke center is the first line of defense in diagnosing and treating stroke and preventing or minimizing permanent brain damage to the patient.

Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS)

Verified Level IV Maternal Care Facility by The Joint Commission

The Joint Commission’s Maternal Levels of Care (MLC) Verification program, offered in collaboration with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), has named Saint Peter’s University Hospital as a Level IV maternal care verified facility. Saint Peter’s is the first in New Jersey and the second in the country to receive this new prestigious designation – and the highest level to be achieved – from The Joint Commission. Saint Peter’s is equipped to deliver all levels of care from low-risk pregnancies to the most complicated cases through its midwifery, obstetrical, maternal-fetal medicine, and neonatology services.
