Saint Peter's University Hospital Receives an ‘A’ in Hospital Safety Grade

November 11, 2019

Saint Peter
NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – Saint Peter’s University Hospital, member of Saint Peter’s Healthcare System, received an “A” for the Fall 2019 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, it was announced yesterday. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade looks at publicly available measures of safety – inpatient injuries, infections, and medical and medication errors.

The Hospital Safety Score is compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading experts on patient safety and is administered by The Leapfrog Group, which for nearly 20 years has collected, analyzed, and published hospital data on safety, quality, and resource use. The Hospital Safety Score is available free to the public with the goal of empowering people with the information they need to make better, informed healthcare decisions.

“Receiving another ‘A’ hospital safety grade is a testament to the constant commitment we have to our patients’ safety,” said Leslie D. Hirsch, FACHE, president and CEO of Saint Peter’s Healthcare System. “We are extremely proud of this achievement and continue to provide our patients with high quality and compassionate care consistent with evidence-based clinical practices.”

Of more than 2,600 hospitals graded nationally, 33% earned an “A,” 25% earned a “B,” 34% earned a “C,” 8% a “D” and just under 1% an “F” in the Fall 2019 survey. However, New Jersey dropped in the rankings, from the sixth ranked state to eighth in the nation for the percentage of A hospitals, at 44.93% (down 0.66% from Spring 2019).

Leapfrog releases the safety grades two times a year, every fall and spring. The ratings are based on 28 quality measures compiled by The Leapfrog Group, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the American Hospital Association. Areas of measurement include nurse communication, hand hygiene adherence and surgical site infection rates, among others. The Leapfrog Group’s letter grade scoring system allows consumers to quickly assess the safety of their local hospital and choose the safest hospital to seek care.

“‘A’ hospitals show us their leadership is protecting patients from preventable medical harm and error,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “It takes genuine commitment at every level – from clinicians to administrators to the board of directors – and we congratulate the teams who have worked so hard to earn this A.”
